I feel like I’ve gotten so much better training with Jess, he’s really a great coach.
He’s got this way of breaking down techniques to their core, which removes the complication. It’s this stripped down way of coaching that makes it easy to understand and immediately effective.
It’s changed my mindset of how I approach BJJ & MMA, and I know the rest of the team shares my opinion.
I have enjoyed learning the fundamentals of MMA and the self-defence style of BJJ being taught, in particular the takedowns and clinch fighting.
The way each move is broken down and built upon makes it easy to learn for all levels of students.
In my opinion what separates Jess from other gyms is the ability to learn MMA and BJJ without the expectations of entering competitions or becoming a fighter.
I just can’t fault the instruction of Jess really, and I’m happy to be part of the Newcastle Mixed Martial Arts team and program.
Through sparring, he initially helped me understand the problems of distance management in my Taekwondo and this understanding of distance management permeates his ideas of striking, takedowns, and submissions.
The lessons are well structured, he’s very relaxed and both patient and understanding of everyone’s learning abilities.
As a complete beginner to BJJ with no prior experience, I’ve really enjoyed learning in a safe, welcoming training space.
The knowledge and experience of the coaches is shared with a pragmatic understanding of what self-defence, BJJ and MMA require, delivered with a sense of humor.
The classes are informative, challenging, and the group supports each other while having a lot of fun. It’s been a great experience.
It’s always hard joining a new club as you don’t know what to expect.
I was welcomed by everyone from the first day I was there, and it was like I had been a member for years.
These guys made an effort to make me feel like part of the team. They wanted me to be there.
The encouragement and support from everyone was outstanding.
Jesse is an amazing teacher; he is really welcoming and makes sure everyone is comfortable and feels a part of the team.
He’s great at explaining the different techniques, and is very patient and happy to spend a little more time when we’re finding something difficult.
Jesse also doesn’t just teach us from a BJJ point of view, but also adds real world context and advice from a self-defense perspective.
The team here is also fantastic, they are a great group of people that treat you with respect and are always willing to help you out.
Jess has a really good understanding of both stand up and grappling and how to transition between the two.
Once you start working with him you’ll experience first hand his heavy, pressure style of wrestling designed to wear you down.
His teaching has provided me with a very effective way to control people on the ground that’s quite different to how I’ve been taught by other instructors.
I actually left Jess for a period of time to go and check out other martial arts gyms in both Adamstown and Rutherford because of their size and reputation.
After having experienced a few different gyms and their culture, I returned to train with him. It became pretty apparent his knowledge of martial arts is well above the standard of other places.
He’s also really easy to get along with and invested in your development, which makes the whole experience a lot more fun.
The instruction of Newcastle Mixed Martial Arts really hits the right mix of understandable lessons, hard training, and having fun.
I’ve been part of boxing gyms in the past where it didn’t feel like they had either my best interests or health at heart.
Jess doesn’t teach with any level of ego. He’s interested in breaking things down for you in a way that makes it immediately understandable and actionable.
Plus, he just seems to be a good guy, so why wouldn’t you want to spend your time learning from someone like that.
Jess became my striking instructor a few years ago.
I’ve really enjoyed the way he teaches and tries to customise the learning to what works best for me.
There’s an intense element of fitness to his classes, I’ve never been so challenged physically as I have in his sessions.
And I like sparring with him because he challenges you without taking advantage of, or hurting you.
His whole program is great.

I have had the pleasure to train under Coach Jess for over two years now.
His ability to break down the finer points of BJJ, wrestling and MMA has made learning under him a fantastic experience.
I look forward to many more years with him and the team.

I find the way Jess teaches very engaging, and his personality supports what we’re doing by not putting too much pressure on you.
With the small group sessions I do with him, I really feel like I’m learning and improving quickly. I always look forward to every class.
